The Oman Medical Association

The Oman Medical Association was established in 2001 by Ministerial Decision No. (88/2001). It enjoys legal personality and includes human doctors, dentists, and workers in other medical professions. Its headquarters are located in the Governorate of Muscat, and its geographical scope covers all governorates of the Sultanate. The Association may open branches after obtaining approval from the Ministry of Social Development and may form scientific committees in accordance with the regulations set forth in the Association’s bylaws.

Objectives of the Association:

The Oman Medical Association aims to achieve a set of key objectives outlined in its bylaws, which are:

  1. Striving to elevate the standard of the medical profession and related sciences and develop them.

  2. Preserving the ethics of the profession and ensuring the proper conduct of members in their practice.

  3. Spreading health awareness in society and working towards improving health services for the community.

  4. Submitting proposals to the relevant authorities to develop health services in the Sultanate.

  5. Working to raise the scientific level of physicians through various means.

  6. Collaborating with similar professional bodies in other countries in areas related to health services and their development.

  7. Assisting association members and defending them before judicial authorities and disciplinary councils.

 

Responsibilities of the Board of Directors:

The Board of Directors is responsible for managing the affairs of the Association and is collectively accountable to the Ministry for all its activities, in accordance with the law and the Association’s bylaws. It is also responsible for the Association’s funds and properties. The Board’s duties include:

  1. Managing the Association’s affairs in technical, financial, and administrative aspects and preparing internal regulations based on models provided by the Ministry.

  2. Forming committees as deemed necessary for smooth operations, with at least one board member represented in each committee. Committee decisions are binding within their defined scope of work and must be presented to the Board for approval at its next meeting.

  3. Appointing, disciplining, and dismissing employees.

  4. Convening ordinary and extraordinary general assemblies in accordance with the law.

  5. Reviewing and deciding on new membership applications and resignations.

  6. Implementing the decisions of the general assembly.

  7. Considering violations committed by members.

  8. Direct supervision of programs and projects established by the Association.

  9. Determining the value of the permanent petty cash.

  10. Preparing final accounts, the financial statement for the ended fiscal year, the proposed budget for the coming year, and the annual report to be presented to the general assembly.

  11. Discussing the Ministry’s observations and preparing appropriate responses.

  12. Informing the Ministry by sending copies of the minutes of Board and general assembly meetings within two weeks from the date of the meeting.

  13. Nominating names for honorary membership to be presented to the general assembly for consideration.

 

Regional and International Cooperation:

On the regional and international level, the Oman Medical Association seeks to achieve:

  1. Active participation in external activities and events to elevate medical standards and ensure the delivery of the best health services.

  2. Strengthening channels of cooperation and maximizing the exchange of expertise among physicians.

  3. Concluding agreements with peer Arab and foreign medical associations in areas of medical and healthcare training deemed suitable for its members.

  4. Cooperating with international and regional professional organizations that support the Association’s objectives.
